(July 17, 2019) Chicago, IL – Today, longtime environmental advocate Sarah Bury formally announced her candidacy for Commissioner of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District through her campaign spokesperson.

A lifelong Chicagoan, Bury’s environmental experience includes serving as a Dale Bryson Water Quality Fellow at the Alliance for the Great Lakes, where she worked on cases involving the impact of algae on the environment and human health, the legal implications of oil pipelines in the Great Lakes, nutrient pollution laws, and the water quality pact between Canada and the United States.

“We’re experiencing the effects of climate change right now,” said Bury. “I’m running for office because Cook County deserves a Commissioner who will work with local community leaders to create proactive solutions and develop green spaces that will benefit every neighborhood in the county.”

Bury grew up in the Clearing neighborhood and attended Whitney Young High School and Roosevelt University before earning a joint Master’s Degree in International Affairs concentrating on Global Environmental Politics and Juris Doctor focusing on Environmental Law from American University. Bury served as the Vice President of the League of Women Voters (LWV) Lake Michigan Region and as Director of LWV Chicago and is a former chair of LWV Chicago’s Environment Committee and former co-chair of LWV Chicago’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion. Bury is also a longtime volunteer for the Sierra Club and has interned for the City of Chicago, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Center for International Environmental Law and the Department of Justice.
